At Drone-Pictures, we are constantly pushing the boundaries of aerial cinematography. Recently, we completed our first-ever night filming mission using the DJI Inspire 3 during a private motorsport event at the renowned Circuit Paul Ricard, in Le Castellet, southern France.
Equipped with the DJI Zenmuse X9 full-frame cinema camera, capable of recording in Apple ProRes RAW and CinemaDNG, the Inspire 3 delivers outstanding image quality in extremely low-light conditions. This advanced technology allows us to produce cinematic aerial footage previously achievable only with helicopters or specialized tracking vehicles.
For this production, the drone was operated in a dual-operator configuration, with one pilot dedicated exclusively to flying while a second operator controlled the camera. This setup ensures maximum safety while providing complete creative freedom to capture smooth, dynamic shots of high-speed racing cars.
Throughout the evening, we filmed a variety of sequences including vehicle tracking shots, cinematic establishing views and immersive aerial perspectives of the circuit. Even under limited lighting, the Inspire 3 demonstrated remarkable low-light performance, delivering detailed images with impressive dynamic range and minimal image noise.
The event concluded with a spectacular fireworks display launched from Le Castellet Airport, creating the perfect finale for this unique production and showcasing the capabilities of modern cinema drones for premium motorsport coverage.
