Marseille’s wastewater treatment plant revealed from the air
In Marseille, much of the city can be explored above ground… but another part lies hidden beneath our feet. This is the underground Marseille explored in the documentary directed by Olivier Mirguet, produced by La Famiglia and Novo19.
For the film, Drone-Pictures carried out several aerial drone shoots of La Géolide, Marseille’s wastewater treatment plant, located in the Huveaune area, close to the iconic Stade Vélodrome.
La Géolide, an industrial site at the heart of Marseille
Commissioned in the late 1980s, La Géolide is a major facility for wastewater treatment in the Marseille metropolitan area. Located in a highly urban environment, it stands just a few hundred metres from the Stade Vélodrome and the busy neighbourhoods of southern Marseille.
Seen from the air, the footage provides a better understanding of this major industrial complex and its relationship with its immediate surroundings: the Huveaune River, urban infrastructure, residential areas and the Vélodrome.
Aerial filming therefore offers a different perspective of the city, providing a broader view of a site that remains relatively discreet when seen from ground level.

Aerial footage supporting the documentary
For Marseille Souterraine, the drone footage complements the images filmed on the ground and inside Marseille’s underground infrastructure. Aerial views help place La Géolide within the city and illustrate the connections between the different elements that make up this part of Marseille.
During this production, Drone-Pictures also captured aerial footage of the surrounding area, including striking views of Marseille and its iconic Stade Vélodrome.
The project also demonstrates the value of drones for audiovisual productions: in just a few shots, it is possible to move from a detailed view of a specific site to a much wider perspective, placing it within its geographical context.
